Glaciers on Mount Everest will be gone by 2100
Glaciers on the goliath Mount Everest are slowly dying a silent death. Scientists have confirmed that about 70% to 100% of the glaciers will cease to exist in the Everest’s region by the end of this century. All the researchers from Nepal, Netherlands and France came to a common conclusion after analyzing the relevant data and weather patterns that the white caps from these mountains have only a century to enjoy their existence.
A 99% mass reduction in the glaciers is expected which makes it horrifying for us to believe. Even if we drop our emission levels into the atmosphere the mass reduction of 70% will still hurt the glaciers by 2100, the end is inevitable.
Shea, a glacier hydrologist at the Kathmandu based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, explained that all the melted water from the glaciers will flow down the mountain and will flood the low lying areas. The amount of water flooding the areas will be enough to create deep lakes and destroy the habitat on the foothill. The satellite images from 1977 to 2010 displays a clear reduction of the glacier concentration by a quarter.
This can turn lethal for the water demands of Nepal which is struggling with lack of access to groundwater and erratic monsoon. The change in climate due to emission of greenhouse gases have started to show their dark presence and who knows what else is about to happen.
We humans are digging our own graves with the very machines we built to ease our lives.
