Yes the spin of our Earth is slowing down, bit by bit. The decrease in its speed is almost negligible but when we consider the age of the cosmos, these little changes can amount to drastic deviations, like in 140 million years this decrease in the speed will amount to a 25 hours day. This amazing phenomenon is caused by the continuous tidal friction acting due the rotation of Earth and Revolution of Moon around the Earth.

The Earth spins at a higher speed than our Moon revolves around it, making 30 rotations before the moon revolves once. This leads to the transfer of Earth’s rotational momentum to the Moon’s orbital momentum causing a decrease in the rotational speed of the Earth and on the contrary causes acceleration it the orbital speed of the moon. The speed of moon is increasing due to this striking game of pulls at the rate of 4 cm per year. In a matter of a millions of years, the moon will appear smaller in the sky as it moving away from us owing to the increase in speed.
