Why Mars Died and Earth Lived?

Almost similar in size, Mars is supposed to be the nearest sibling of the Earth. Both share a huge set of common traits which make Mars our colonial brother. However there is one striking difference which creates the rift. Mars turned out to become a lonely sterile planet devoid of life while Earth is flourishing with millions of species in its belly.

So what is the major reason behind such huge differences in the fates of these heavenly bodies? Where did all the air and water on Mars go before leaving the planet barren and inhabitable? And were there other life forms on Mars before the universe stripped it off its fuels for life?
