Will Earth survive the Sun's Red Giant phase?

In about 5 billion years the struggle for survival will begin when our Sun will start to fade away. An average sized star like our Sun will first expand itself to form a Red Giant and then will die as a White Dwarf. During its final dying days it will grow 100 times it present size, engulfing everything that will come in its way.

Mercury and Venus will succumb to its wrath but Earth has a 50-50 chance to survive. Its just at the right distance where the Sun may start to retract its size and become a White Dwarf, hence, sparing our Earth. It is also possible that the Sun may keep growing its size to come close enough to our Home and fry it into ashes.

This final fight will have no witnesses as every living cell will be dead by then. Its a cruel fight for survival and no one can tell the outcomes. We can only speculate and here is what we can.
