New Horizons completes the Solar Family Photograph

New Horizon reaches Pluto

Nasa's New Horizons had a tryst with the most talked about Dwarf Planet speeding past at 12 km per hour. This photo of Pluto with a heart shaped shiny surface was released by Nasa on Tuesday.

This journey of our Solar Family's photographs is complete and now all the 9 planets (including Pluto, which is a Dwarf Planet) which we all loved to read about when we were in school, are visited by at least one space probe from Earth.

Nasa will release more colored photographs of Pluto on Wednessday. Currently the probe is out of contact from Earth while clicking more pictures.

New Horizons' flyby of 2,370km-wide Pluto is a key moment in the history of space exploration.

Alan Stern, the mission's chief scientist, was excited with this feat while saying "We have completed the initial reconnaissance of the Solar System, an endeavour started under President Kennedy more than 50 years ago and continuing to today under President Obama,"

He also added with a pride face "It's really historic what the US has done, and the New Horizons team is really proud to have been able to run that anchor leg and make this accomplishment."

The journey of New Horizons started on January 19, 2006 as it was destined to study Pluto, its absurdly many moons (Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberos and Hydra) and the Kuiper's Belt.

Nasa reported that the surface of Pluto showed a history of impacts and probable tectonic activities of the planet may be some time in past.
