Facts about Pluto- The Dwarf Planet
1. Pluto is 39.5 Astronomical Units (i.e. 3.67 billion) away from Sun.
2. Although, earlier thought to be a planet, Pluto is not a planet anymore but belongs to another class of hevenly bodies known as "Dwarf Planets".
3. Pluto has five known moons: Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberos, andHydra.
4. Pluto's moon Charon is it's largest moon being almost half it's size hence both of them are considered to be a binary system revolving around a common point outside both the bodies.
5. On 14 July 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft became the first spacecraft to fly by Pluto.
6. The temperature on Pluto is 233 to 223 Celsius below zero.
7. Pluto takes 248-years to orbit around the sun.
8. The light travel time from Pluto to earth is 4.5 hours!
9. The atmosphere sublimates from one area in the sun and is deposited to the other in darkness, and then this reverses half-way through the orbit.
10. The atmosphere of Pluto is approximately 98% N2, with traces of CH4 and CO.
11. Pluto was first discovered in 1939 by Clyde Tombaugh.
12. Michael E. Brown's work downgraded Pluto to Dwarf Planet from earlier being a Planet.
13. Pluto is 1/6th the size of Earth and it gravity is 15 times lesser.
